A yard of roadworks signs, April 2022.
<div>On the edge of Dubai there is a lot in the sand. It is where roadwork signs are stored. Hundreds of arrows: straight ahead, merge right, pull over, diversion. Each one points somewhere. None leads to a road. They contradict each other, propped on wooden trestles. They are waiting to be put out, or they have already been taken down. It's the city in one image: a lot of movement, a lot of directions, and at the end, sand. Here, nobody looks at this. You follow the arrows on the motorway; you never see the yard where they sleep. Yet this is where Dubai shows itself best: a city that keeps changing its route, and never arrives.</div><div><br></div>
