Inhabited Stone

Petra, Jerash, Ajloun — May 2022.

<div>Three places, one material: stone. At Petra they carved it out of the cliff. At Jerash they stood it up in columns. At Ajloun they stacked it into thick walls.</div><div>What held me wasn't the size of the façades. It was what lives around them. Goats in front of the Monastery. A camel in a red harness under an arch. A kid on his donkey, a dog following. The stone was never left alone. People walk through it, use it, pass it without a glance.</div><div>I shot both: the block carved two thousand years ago, and the animal grazing beside it. That is the subject. Not the monument alone. The monument still lived in.</div>
