The south coast of Sri Lanka, February 2023.
The Sri Lanka in the brochures fits in a swimming pool: flat water, saturated colours, deckchairs in a row. The one I found was moving. The sea pounded against the light, with the sun facing me. The wind tore off the spray. Waves broke on red rocks. A boy watched the sun go down. At night in Galle, the door of an old colonial bank was lit up. None of this fits in a brochure. That is exactly what I wanted to keep.
