AMSTERDAM — NIGHT WALK
Two hours, one 135 mm, from dusk to full dark
One lens, one evening — and a 16 mm, once. From the Brouwersgracht to the Damrak, the light falls between half past eight and twenty to eleven, and the city turns over three times: first the water and the boats in the last of the sun, then the shopfronts taking over from the sky, finally the people the dark pulls apart from each other. A long lens imposes distance — you don't move closer, you wait for the scene to arrive.

When the façades take over from the sky
Hats waiting out the night behind glass. Nobody inside, every light still on.
Tuschinski at the exact minute the sky matched the tilework. Opened in 1921 and still the best-dressed building in Amsterdam.
Full dark
The people the dark pulls apart, and the water starting over
Four lanterns for one doorway, and two men walking past without looking up.
Same bench, two minutes later. They were watching the street instead of talking, and it suited them.
Three bikes parked for the night above an arch that stays lit anyway.
The last terrace still open on the street, one chair already empty beside them.
